The Council Chambers

The history of the Council Chambers began in 1868. Initially this building, with it's porch and gothic windows was built in 1864 to be the meeting place for the district council of the Hutt and Hill Rivers, which had no township within it's boundaries. It also doubled as the Police Station. Bungaree was the most northern settlement in this area for several years and for 9 years, while there was no police station in Clare, the troppers made the Council Chambers their head quarters.

As the sheep increased in number, so did the staff at Bungaree, and at one stage there were 50 shepherds. Consequently, there was soon need for a school and hence the Schoolroom was in a room attached to the council chambers.

In 1930 the school was closed because there were only 10 students, and when the Council of the Hutt and Hill Rivers was dissolved and merged into the neighbouring councils, the building was converted into a Station Hand's cottage. In the mid 1970s, it was again renovated and became the Jackaroos Quarters.

Today this quaint 3 bedroomed cottage is accommodation for guests and has been renovated with introduction of modern facilties, without detracting from the character of the building.
