The Council Chambers

The Council Chambers has a fascinating history.

Initially, Bungaree was the most northern settlement in this area. For nine years, while there was no police station in Clare, the troopers made the Council Chambers at Bungaree their headquarters.

In 1868 the right hand end of this building, with its porch and Gothic windows, was build to be the meeting place for the District Council of the Hutt and Hill Rivers, which had no township within its boundaries.

The little building was also The School.

Just as the 2,000 sheep increased in number so did the staff at Bungaree, and at one stage there were 50 shepherds. Consequently, there was the need for a school. The schoolroom was located at one time in the room attached to the Council Chambers. Today this is the left hand side of the cottage; the portion painted white.

In 1930 there were only 10 pupils and so the school was closed. The Council of the Hutt and Hill Rivers was dissolved and merged into the neighbouring council areas. This building was then converted into a Station Hand's Cottage.

In the mid 1970's the building was again renovated and became the Jackaroos Quarters.

Jackaroos are typically 18-22 year old men on a two year contract. The Bungaree Jackaroos lived in the Council Chambers for some eight years until they were moved into the house keepers quarters above the homestead kitchen. Today this quaint three bedroomed cottage is furnished in an appropriate style for guests.

Modern facilities have been introduced without detracting from the character of the buildings.
